Food
Food
At Kids Nursery, we understand that healthy, balanced meals are an essential part of a child’s growth, learning, and overall development. We are passionate about providing nutritious, freshly prepared food and creating enjoyable mealtime experiences that help children develop healthy habits for life.
Our Approach
We believe that children should be introduced to a wide range of flavours, textures, and food experiences from an early age. Our menus are carefully planned to offer a variety of meals that are balanced, appealing, and full of goodness. We promote an understanding of where food comes from, how it helps our bodies grow, and why making healthy choices matters.
We follow the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which emphasises the importance of promoting good health and ensuring that all meals and snacks are nutritious and balanced.
We are committed to:
Offering freshly prepared, well-balanced meals that include plenty of fruit, vegetables, and whole foods.
Encouraging children to explore new tastes and develop positive attitudes towards food.
Catering for all dietary needs, allergies, and cultural preferences.
Creating relaxed, sociable mealtimes that encourage conversation, independence, and good manners.
Healthy Meals Every Day
All meals are prepared on site by our nursery cook using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Our weekly menus are designed to provide variety and ensure that children receive all the nutrients and energy they need throughout the day.
Children enjoy breakfast, snacks, lunch, and tea depending on their session times, with milk and water available at all times. Mealtimes are seen as learning opportunities. Children are encouraged to help set up, serve themselves, pour drinks, and clear away afterwards. Staff sit alongside them, supporting conversation, healthy choices, and the development of independence and confidence.
Allergies, Intolerances, and Dietary Needs
We take allergies and special dietary requirements extremely seriously. Every child’s needs are discussed with parents before they start nursery, and information is shared with all staff to ensure the highest standards of care and safety.
Our procedures include:
Gathering detailed information about allergies, intolerances, and dietary preferences during enrolment.
Providing clear individual care plans for any child with allergies or medical dietary requirements.
Training all staff in allergy awareness, food handling, and emergency procedures.
Displaying all children’s allergies and dietary requirements in each room, including the kitchen to ensure that information is not missed. This display will have the photo of each child along with their dietary/ allergy need.
Each child as their own place mat, children with allergies and dietary needs are identified by red placemats. The placemats will also indicate their mealtime need to ensure safe food preparation and serving.
All staff are PFA trained, there will be at least 1 staff member that has a valid PFA certificate in each room at mealtimes.
Each mealtime will have a dedicated staff member that is responsible for the serving of each meal for the entire time. This information is recorded and saved. This must be a member of staff who holds a valid PFA certificate.
Regularly reviewing care plans and updating them in partnership with parents and healthcare professionals.
We also carry out regular dietary observations to monitor how children eat, what they enjoy, and how their eating habits develop. This helps us ensure each child is eating well, maintaining energy levels, and receiving the right nutritional balance. Any concerns are shared promptly with parents so that we can work together to support each child’s health and wellbeing.
Learning Through Food
Food and nutrition are part of our wider curriculum. Children learn about healthy living through hands-on, enjoyable experiences such as:
Growing fruit, vegetables, and herbs in our nursery garden.
Taking part in simple cooking and baking activities.
Exploring food through sensory play.
Talking about health, exercise, and oral hygiene.
These experiences help children understand where food comes from, appreciate the effort involved in preparing it, and make positive connections with healthy eating.
Mealtimes are happy, social experiences that build friendships, language skills, and a sense of belonging.
We regularly review our menus, allergy procedures, and food policies to ensure they meet the latest nutritional guidelines and EYFS welfare standards.
Working in Partnership with Parents
We value open communication with families and believe that mealtimes are most successful when home and nursery work together. Parents are welcome to view our menus, share ideas, and tell us about their child’s preferences or needs.
Together, we help children develop a lifelong love of good food and healthy living.
